Field trial of permethrin for the control of Triatoma infestans.

چکیده
Control of Chagas’ disease vectors in Central and South America has relied principally on repeated spraying of infested houses with benzene hexachloride (BHC) or dieldrin. Nevertheless, the continued use of these chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides is currently under review. In Venezuela, strains of Rhodnius prolixus resistant to dieldrin and crossresistant to BHC have already emerged (1, Z), and several organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides are being evaluated as alternative control agents (3, 4). In Argentina, ultra-lowvolume application of malathion (5) has replaced BHC in a substantial part of the national campaign to control Chagas’ disease. It thus seems inevitable that BHC will eventually be replaced as the preferred insecticide for triatomine control in Brazil as well. Prolonged residua1 activity is considered an important feature of a triatomine control agent. For one thing, the bugs can remain hidden in deep wall-crevices many days before emerging to feed. Also, egg-laying sites are often virtually invulnerable to direct insecticide spraying, and eggs can normally take up to 20 days to hatch. Thus, to achieve effective population control it is desirable for the insec-

Effectiveness of residual spraying of peridomestic ecotopes with deltamethrin and permethrin on Triatoma infestans in rural western Argentina: a district-wide randomized trial.
OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of a single residual spraying of pyrethroids on the occurrence and abundance of Triatoma infestans in peridomestic ecotopes in rural La Rioja. METHODS A total of 667 (32.8%) peridomestic sites positive for T. infestans in May 1999 were randomly assigned to treatment within each village, sprayed in December 1999, and reinspected in December 2000. Treatmen...
متن کاملIncoordination, paralysis and recovery after pyrethroid treatment on nymphs III of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).
Symptoms of poisoning for deltamethrin and cis-permethrin on nymphs III of Triatoma infestans were described. The time required for incoordination and paralysis were determined. Deltamethrin was equal or more rapid in the onset of the first effect (accordingly to dose), and cis-permethrin in the onset of the second one. There were no significant differences between incoordination doses 50% (Inc...
متن کاملL925I Mutation in the Para-Type Sodium Channel Is Associated with Pyrethroid Resistance in Triatoma infestans from the Gran Chaco Region
BACKGROUND Chagas' disease is an important public health concern in Latin America. Despite intensive vector control efforts using pyrethroid insecticides, the elimination of Triatoma infestans has failed in the Gran Chaco, an ecoregion that extends over Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The voltage-gated sodium channel is the target site of pyrethroid insecticides. Point mutations in dom...
متن کاملNew insights on the spread of Triatoma infestans from Bolivia--implications for Chagas disease emergence in the southern cone.
Triatoma infestans, now eliminated from most of South America by control campaigns, has been and still is the main Chagas disease vector due to its ability to colonize rural dwellings. The traditional hypothesis put forth to explain T. infestans adaptation to the synanthropic environment rests on the domestication of wild guinea pigs, one of its natural hosts, by Andean tribes about 5000 BC. He...
